BACK CARE CLINIC:

Overview

Your back is one of the most important parts of your body. It allows you to stand up, sit upright, and bend over. It provides your body with the necessary structure and support that makes the ability to function and move normally possible. Your back is also susceptible to a variety of problems, conditions and injuries, and can involve complex treatment to manage them. This is why it is vital for persons who experience back problems to seek out a comprehensive approach to back care management in order to live a healthy active life.

Back pain is one of the most common health problems among people all over the world and most people will experience back pain at some time in their life. The causes are numerous: some are self-inflicted due to a lifetime of bad habits. Others are due to accidents, work and sports injuries. Although the causes may be different, they often share the same symptoms.

Symptoms

Persistent aching or stiffness anywhere along your spine, from the base of the neck to the hips.

Sharp, localized pain in the neck and back especially after lifting heavy objects or engaging in other strenuous activity.

Chronic ache in the neck, middle or lower back, especially after sitting, standing, or driving for extended periods.

Sometimes back pain can be a symptom of a serious underlying condition and for that reason it is important to seek out medical advice, if you are experiencing any of the following:

·         Numbness, tingling, or loss of control in your arms or legs. This may signal pressure on the central or peripheral nerves.

·         Pain in your back that extends downward along the back of the leg. You may be suffering from sciatica.

·         Increased pain when you cough or bend forward at the waist. This can be the sign of a herniated disc.

·         Pain that is accompanied by fever. You may have a bacterial infection.

·         Dull pain in one area of your spine when lying in or getting out of bed. If you are over 50 you may be suffering from osteoarthritis.

·         Loss of bowel and bladder control. This may indicate pressure on the central nerves.

We encourage you to re-evaluate the way you care for your back. Basic yet effective forms of back care can sometimes make a big difference in improving your symptoms and make you feel better.
